Hungry? Here is our little list of Restaurants in the area. We have sorted them by time of day. Breakfast: All of our guests will receive a basket of homemade goodies at check-in. If you can resist the temptaion to eat them right away, then you will have some coffee, juice and a baked goodie for brekkie. For some people, this is plenty, "Give me a coffee and a muffin, and I'm ready to go!" For the rest of you, we have listed some other choices. In South River, 1 mile north of the motel, there is a place open for breakfast. Antonio's Grill is located in the Shell gas station. Martha and Tim have never eaten there (because we our own kitchen, right here), and we hear reasonably good comments from the folks who have been there. 1 mile south of us, across from the high school, is MMM..Just like Mom's. Kelly and Ann just opened up in February, and things are going pretty good for them. Martha and Tim went there a couple of times, and we really thought that things were pretty good! They have lots of homebaked goodies for take-out as well as a full menu. They only do breakfast on the weekends, opening up at 9 AM. In Sundridge, 5 miles south of the motel, there are also two restaurants open for Brekkie. The Blue Roof, which the locals still call, The Sunoco (because it used to be a gas station too) is located at the first traffic light. The Blue Roof is a very busy place, and we hear pretty good things about it, especially from our daughter's freinds who work there. The Blue Roof is easy to get to as well. The other place in Sundridge is Jim & Elsies, which is located on the Main St., right behind TheBlue Roof. We don't hear to much about Jim & Elsies, but that doesn't really mean anything. There is also one other place in Sundridge, and that is at the Caswell Hotel.....but we can't really recommend them now can we? The Caswell is located on the lake, and there cafe is located in the basement, between the pool and the bar. Also in Sundridge is The Maple Sugar House (well, its really just south of town on the highway, at the top of the hill). The Maple Sugar House serves a delicious breakfast (and lunch) from 8AM till 3PM every day from March till October. Lunch At lunch time (or dinner for some folks) there are lots of choices sprinkled all over the area. In South River, Antonio's is open, as well as, Wongs Chinese, which some people swear is the best! Wong's is located on Ottawa Ave. (our main st.), just turn right at the traffic light and they are right there on the right. The other place in South River for lunch is Renee's Cafe. Renee offers a nice light mix of soup and sandwiches, with always local art on the walls. Renee's is also the only place in town to get a Cappucino or Espresso! Renee is closed on Sundays and Mondays most of the year. In the summertime, South River also boasts the best chip truck in the world! The Stop 11 is owned by Sherry Dickerson. She runs the best little chip truck (and ice cream shop) going and attracts a crowd on those nice warm summer days. Sherry is located next to the beer store, on the West side of Highway 11. Tell her im and Martha sent you and receive a free smile! Just down the highway, MMM...Just like Mom's is also open for lunch. In Sundridge, you can still get a meal at The Blue Roof, or Jim & Elsies (and the hotel). In addition, you can eat at The Grill House or The Steirerhut. Both of these places are located on the highway just south of the second trafic light in Sundridge. The Grill House offers the usual 'grill house' fare in both food and beverage. The Steirerhut offers some genuine Austrian meals. Lots of Shnitzel and sauerkraut....and good Austrian beer! If you have a hankering for pizza or subs, try Enzo's, on the highway across from the Grill House. Enzo's delivers as well, if you don't want to leave your room! Enzo's Pizza Hotline is 384-0375. Also in Sundridge is Ha's Chinese Restaurant. Lots of folks think that Ha's is pretty good. They are located on the highway, right next to Mac Lang (Sells for Less) Chrysler Dodge. Just south of Sundridge is Danny's Justa Pasta, read on to find out more about Dan. Sometimes, the best place for lunch is the place that you don't have to share with anyone else. Martha and Tim like to pack a picnic lunch, and find a nice quiet spot away from everything else..... There are lots of places in our area that are perfect for a little afternoon meal and siesta, after all, that is why we live here! Why not go to the grocery store, pick up some meat and cheese and bread..... then go to the liquour store for a beverage ( remember...screw tops only!) and head out to your own quiet sunny spot. Supper At suppertime, there are still lots of choices. In South River, all 4 restaurants are open until at least 8 PM. Renee's is open for supper too, and on the weekends, she offers live music in the folk vein. The Chinese restaurant and the chip truck and Just like Mom's aren't usually open very late. Watch this space for information about the new and improved South River Dairy Bar and Moose Crossing! Martha and Tim have almost finished buying the place back from Tim's ex's bank and will be selling it under a power of sale...... more news to follow..... In Sundridge, the choices for supper are about the same as for lunch, except that the Blue Roof closes up pretty early. Just south of Sundridge, on the highway, is Danny's Justa Pasta. Danny's is without fail, the finest restaurant in the area. People come from all over, and in the summer it is not uncommon for folks to wait an hour for a table, and another hour for supper. Danny's is not a large restaurant so waiting is half the fun. The food is really good, but it's not cheap.... Danny's is where we go to celebrate special occasions (or when someone else is paying ;) There are other restaurants in the area, like The Village Pub in Burk's Falls. The Village Pub is a great place to go for a beer and some nachos. Martha and Tim like to go in the wintertime, and cosy up in front of the fireplace and have a pint or two and some Nachos (fingerfood is very sensual). They also have live music or a DJ on the weekends. The Village Pub is located in Downtown Burk's Falls in the basement of a big old building. Down Highway 124, towards Parry Sound, you can try out The Swiss Country House Restaurant, which is located in the Ahmic Lake Resort, on Ahmmic Lake. The owners are Swiss and so is the food. Martha and Tim went there in the spring time and had an enjoyable meal. They have no patio, although they do overlook the lake. Jakes' Place in Port Loring is a great place to go for Fish n' Chips. Jake knows all about the Port Loring area. They call it Argyle, but we don't know why! Jake is a big booster of the local snowmobile club, so go ahead and ask him if you can get there from here! Port Loring is about an hour from South River, but Martha and Tim like to drive out there in the summer via the back roads and then drive home via the back roads. Sometimes we stop along the way to enjoy a particularly pretty spot, or just to stop..... As we find out about more places, we'll tell you about them too. |
